Ident video
As well as organising the files after we had finished shooting day to day, we also had to apply the footage we had to the pre-production structure we had planned in the storyboard, this involved picking the correct piece of footage to match the feeling of the scene. Once we had found the correct footage we matched it to the 'action shot', an example of this is the first scene with the girl and the second scene with the flowers.
A problem we encountered was keeping the shooting settings consistent. At one point we forgot to make sure the settings were the same which resulted in the scene below of the second set of flowers being grainy because the resolution was much lower than the previous footage.
Narrative and film is all about timing. The scene below was difficult to time because it effected the scene dramatically if the timing was wrong. The candle being blown out happened in about 0.2 of a second; cutting to the next scene quickly gave the scene a sense of pace different from the previous scenes which we liked.
It was hard to find 'action shot' or scenes which try and explain the emotions the people in the clips were discussing because it is all subjective at the end of the day. Some clips just felt right with the action shots such as the flower scene or the lantern scene. It really helped set the tone of the film the more appropriate the 'action shots' were.
Audio within the shooting was actually quite simple. The microphone we used was sensitive enough to pick up the sounds we wanted but also cancels unnecessary sounds such as traffic etc. The pigeon scene required the audio of the clip to be raised to really get a feel for the pigeons flying away with the wings making the majority of the noise.
The DCM logo really grew on me as the dynamic elements works well with our short clip. The logo is especially successful in use with digital media. We see the logo being laid over the top of the publics clips using a mobile application that would automatically layer the two.
Development video
For the development video we really wanted to show how we approached the brief and also how we physically put in the effort of speaking to members of the public, which required the unsuccessful clips of us approaching people. Although the development video allowed us to more time it was still difficult thinking about the best was to portray our journey.
We felt we should try and keep the film as consistent as possible. We decided a grid format showing all aspects of our process from pre-production to post-production would be most appropriate.
We started planning which clip would go in which part of the grid. Each part of the grid was called a tile so that we could number them and arrange them. I was surprised to learn that the software we used didn't have a grid feature allowing us to drop the clip into a tile and being automatically cropped, instead I had to manually crop each clip and resize it into a vector grid image. It was extremely tedious and took a while to properly fit all of the clips.
Me and Tom had worked on the brief from the beginning discussing our vision in great details regularly, this gave us a false illusion that our idea was extremely clear, because of this we had to remind ourselves that it probably wasn't and that we needed to make it as clear as possible on the development video. I used this three step image to communicate our process.
You can see how the tiles look once they have all been dropped into the grid. Another problem I faced was that the clips were quite large which made the sequence lag. I reduced the resolution of the clips and had to re-arrange the grid. This brief has really improved my chosen software skills.
The development video finished with the concept being applied as we envision. This scene shows how people could interact with the ident nationwide through the use of social media. The animation was created using images. If I was to do the process again I would use After Effects to properly animate the sequence, the time frame didn't exist for me to learn another the software.
