The first reference examples I looked at were AirBNB, Kodesk and Couch Surfing which were mentioned on the RSA toolkit.
Collaborative Consumption examples
AirBNB
Discover amazing, unique accommodations in 192 countries. With more than 10 million nights booked worldwide, Airbnb is the world leader in travel rentals.
AirBNB allows everyday people to stay in everyday people's houses. Using a customer review system the user is able to pick somewhere to stay they feel comfortable with. Once they have concluded their stay they can then review their experience.
Couch Surfing
Couchsurfing is a global community of 7 million people in more than 100,000 citieswho share their life, their world, their journey. Couchsurfing connects travelers with a global network of people willing to share in profound and meaningful ways, making travel a truly social experience.
Tinder
Tinder finds out who likes you nearby and connects you with them if you're also interested. It's the new way to meet people around you.
Freecycle
he worldwide Freecycle Network is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns.
Envirophone
Envirophone allows you to trade your old mobile phone for cash. Although I don't think this would fully answer the RSA brief I still think it is sharing. Its hugely successful and means that people can easily recycle their phones.
Instagram
Take a picture or video, choose a filter to transform its look and feel, then post to Instagram — it's that easy. You can even share to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and more. It's a new way to see the world.

I managed to pick two potential ideas which I decided to research further from my design sheets. The first was the re-usable envelope, the second the skip sharing.
I started doing more in depth research into the re-usable envelope as I thought it was a good idea although a big project for one week. The idea was to design an envelope that the more people bought the more would be in circulation eventually saving hundreds of thousand envelopes a month. This answered the brief perfectly as it hit the following judging criteria - environment and social benefit, design thinking, commercial awareness and magic. Unfortunately when I started doing more research I found that the idea had already been done well:

You can find places to stay, or maybe let someone else stay at your accommodation.
Tinder
Tinder finds out who likes you nearby and connects you with them if you're also interested. It's the new way to meet people around you.
I think the unique feature of Tinder is the ultra fast connection to other people. It allows you to scroll through people you want to connect with by simply flicking through their pictures. I think it primarily for people looking for love. I personally don't use this application. Dating sites are not new, I think its just the way the app is designed allows you to judge people based on appearance quickly which makes it successful.

Instagram is hugely successful and was apparently sold to Facebook for 1 billion dollars. Although it was worth that much to Facebook it doesnt actually make any money as a stand alone application. There is no advertising.
This is an interesting article about how free apps can make money:

Zopa
How does peer-to-peer lending work?
Also known as social lending or lend-to-save, peer-to-peer lending works by individual savers and borrowers coming together to get better rates. At Zopa we match sensible borrowers looking for low rate loans with smart savers looking for high interest on their savings.

You can see they really did a good job. I'm pretty certain we will be seeing this design in the UK.
So unfortunately for me this idea had already been executed really well, still for a good cause. I moved on to my next idea which was the skip Sharing idea.
