We also discussed the purpose of a flag and how they represent something either historically or symbolically. We decided we wanted something that was visually inspiring and less concept driven. We liked the idea of experimenting with a totally new process. The project was going to be more process driven.
We needed to find a theme we could explore using a certain techniques. We started by noting interesting subject and possible processes.
I brought up the idea of marbling with Imogen and she brought up the idea of wood texture printing.
We decided using wood to create texture patterns denoting the rings of the tree would be difficult because we had no immediate access to a sliced segment of tree. We had no forms of transport and neither of us owned a chain saw. Instead we decided to go with the marbling technique and carry the theme of 'nature' into our subject matter.
Plan of action
- Buy marbling kit
- Illustrate natural patterns
- Research marbling techniques
- Understand how we could physically incorporate pattern within the marbling effect
- Decide the final format of the flag (material, wood, paper)
Eventually we decided we were going to try and marble onto wood. Using a natural pattern we were going to create templates in which we could apply to the wood and after the marbling technique had been applied we would deduct the natural pattern and remove the marbling ink from that area, a reduction technique.
We thought about the possibility of a marbled floor made of laminate wood, but we actually found a studio that had already done it.
