You can see how we got to the current union jack with the combinations of the following:
Since 1801, the British flag has been made up of the cross of St George to represent England
the cross of St Patrick for Ireland
and the cross of St Andrew, or Saltire, for Scotland
Because the principality of Wales had already been united with England when the first union flag was created in 1606, it was not deemed necessary to include anything to represent the Welsh as their country was not a separate kingdom
The Welsh Flag
The flag incorporates the Red Dragon of Cadwaladr, King of Gwynedd, along with the Tudor colours of green and white. It was used by Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 after which it was carried in state to St Paul's Cathedral. The red dragon was then included as a supporter of the Tudor royal arms to signify their Welsh descent. It was officially recognised as the Welsh national flag in 1959.
without Scottish Saltire
"As you can see, I have kept St George's Cross to represent England and St Patrick's Saltire to represent Northern Ireland, though the blue colour from the Flag of Scotland has been replaced by green because of the green in the Flag of Wales."

Adbusters
I think this design is interesting because it poses a valid question to the general public. If were honest the corporations denoted on this flag make the decisions, might as well be honest.
Each flag is a secret info-graphic, which doesn't exactly highlight the more positive statistics of the country. Example, how many American states are classed overall as obese, or how many past presidents have been black. I think this idea is really clever and it a way that captures your attention. At face value most of the flag designs apart from the colour don't really visually looked influenced from the current US flag design, which I think most people would generally question.
I think this as a concept is the best way to answer the Beautiful meme.

This is a great statistic!
These flag designs are brilliant because again they pose a question and also tell a story. I think this will heavily influence my design decisions. I'm starting to think its less about the countries that make up the flag design as a whole for example green being included because may be conceived as including the welsh national colours. I think the flag design should be about explaining the countries current problems. A flag re-design is the last thing we should be thinking about, what about the national debt?
European Commission logo
"European Commission spent £300,000 on logo redesign"
The European Commission spent £315,000 to redesign its logo by simply inserting lines representing the outline of the Brussels executive's HQ around the EU flag.
I think this sums up what it means to do design for the public sector. Just like the olympic logo a vast amount of money spend and people won't understand where the money went. I think it renders the process a waste of time.
Rainbow flag (LGBT movement)
The rainbow flag, sometimes LGBT pride flag or gay pride flag, is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements in use since the 1970s. The colours reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride in LGBT rights marches. It originated in California, but is now used worldwide.
Designed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, the design has undergone several revisions to first remove then re-add colours due to widely available fabrics.[1][2] As of 2008, the most common variant consists of six stripes, with the colours red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The flag is commonly flown horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as it would be in a natural rainbow.

Infographic style
I started looking at info-graphics based on the UK. From here I started collecting facts I thought were interesting so that I could begin creating my own info-graphics.
